Description

Joie d’Vie. Original drypoint etching by Louis Icart (1888 - 1950.) As an innovative artist, the artist is virtually unmatched as he had a successful career for over 40 years. In the 1920s, he captivated the free spirited Parisian art scene as he juxtaposed traditional forms with the avant-garde Art Deco movement as pioneered and perfected various etching techniques.  In his female subject, henceforth referred to simply as the ‘Icart Girl,’ he achieved the elusive combination of innocence and experience that would become his signature. The present work, ‘Joy of Life’ in English, the classically dressed and smartly hatted Icart Girl ascends a hill on a windy, sunlit day with her two dogs. It served as the cover illustration for one of the editions of The Complete Icart. Full sheet, properly pencil signed lower right, Windmill embossed and exposition framed and double matted with acid free, conservation mount.
