Marked ‘Elegant-Universal No. 149,’ and signed Cribbon & Sexton - Chicago. Circa 1890, both Henry Cribbon and James Sexton were veterans of the Civil War who settled in Chicago during the postwar years where they founded a company on North Sacramento that produced stoves of all size and variety. The 149 was among the company’s top of the line offerings and was doubtlessly installed in one of America’s Gilded Age mansions during the boom years of the late 19th century.
